Overview

Mount Kailash is one of the most popular sacred peaks out of the Panch Kailash. The Panch Kailash includes Adi Kailash, Mani Mahesh, Kinnaur Kailash and Shrikhand Mahadev. It is believed that Mount Kailash is regarded as the spiritual center of the universe.

Mount Kailash is a peak located in the Tibet Autonomous Region of China. It is also known as Kangrinboqe Peak in Tibetan language. It is at an elevation of 6,638 meters (27,778 ft.) above sea level. Likewise, it is said to be the holy residence of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati. It is made up of black rock. It lies near Lake Manasarovar and Lake Rakshastal in Tibet. Lake Manasarovar is also known as Mapam Yumco. It is a sacred lake. Whereas, Lake Rakshastal is known as La’nga Co. It is regarded as the Ghost Lake.

Of the two, Mansarovar is located at 4,590 meters (15,060 feet). It is regarded as one of the highest freshwater lakes in the world. It is known for its crystal-clear waters and spiritual significance. People believe that drinking water from the lake’s washes away a pilgrim’s sins for a hundred lifetimes. It is also believed that taking a holy dip in the lake delivers the pilgrim to paradise.

Mount Kailash Mansarovar Yatra is the yatra or tour to beautiful Mount Kailash and taking a holy dip in Mansarovar Lake. Every year thousands and thousands of people visit from all around the word. It holds the significant power for several religions. It includes Hinduism, Buddhism, Jainism, and Bon. According to Hinduism, the mountain is the world’s center and where Shiva live. But according to Jainism, the peak is where its ancestor Rishabhanatha found the path. Buddhism says that mountain is the residence of Cakrasamvara representing boundless happiness. And for Bönpo Religion, Mt Kailash is a nine-story swastika mountain. They believe that it is the seat of spiritual power.

People have been walking around the Mount Kailash on foot. However, it is not easy to cover 52kms/32miles on foot in a single day. One needs to be strong both physically and mentally strong to complete it. Generally, people take 3 days to finish this walk. While Buddhists and Hindus move in a clockwise way. And, Bon and Jain move in an anticlockwise direction.

Mid-May to Mid-October is regarded as best time for the Kailash Mansoravar Yatra. Mount Kailash Mansarovar Yatra Itinerary

The journey of the Mount Kailash Mansarovar Yatra will start from Kathmandu to Syabrubesi early in the morning. The distance will be approximately 152 kilometers. You will have several stops on the way for refreshments and to enjoy the scenery. You will also see the views of Ganesh Himal (7422m), Langtang Ri (7205m), Langtang Lirung (7227m), and Dorje Lakpa (6966m). Some parts of the road may be narrow and bumpy. After driving through Trishuli Bazaar, Dhunche, and many small villages, you will arrive in Sybrubensi. Syabrubesi town is a gateway to the Langtang National Park. It is also a popular starting point for treks in the region.

You will check in into a guesthouse and spending the night there.

Early in the morning you will be having your breakfast in the guesthouse. After having the breakfast, you will be driving towards Kerung. It will take about 1 hour to reach Rasuwagadhi. Rasuwagadhi is the border side of Nepal. So, you will be passing border towards Tibet. You will walk across the Friendship Bridge to the Chinese immigration post on the Tibetan side. There you will be completing Chinese immigration and customs formalities. This process can take some time, so patience is required. Then you will be driving to Kerung, an isolated valley in the Himalayan range in Tibet. After reaching Kerung, you will check in into a hotel and spending a night there.

You will be starting your day with a breakfast in the hotel. After that, you will be taken to a short walk around Kerung town to help your body adjust with the Tibet’s High Altitude. A rest day in Kerung is an essential part of the Mount Kailash Mansarovar Yatra. You can explore the beautiful Gyirong Valley. It is known for greenery and stunning views of the surrounding mountains. You can also visit local monasteries and temples. You can also participate in prayer sessions. You can enjoy local cuisines and hot baths. You should drink plenty of water to stay hydrated. And, you should avoid alcohol and caffeine because it can lead you to dehydration. You will be staying at hotel in Kerung that day.  So, you can take rest, pack and organize your equipment for the upcoming day.

You will begin the day with a breakfast in Kerung. Then you will be departed early in the morning. You will be crossing La Lungla Pass (5000 m). From there you will have a beautiful view of the Himalayas. They are Gaurishankar (7134m), Shishapangma (8013m), and Langtang (7234m). You will visit Lake Peiko Tsu and cross the holy river of Brahmaputra to reach Saga.

After reaching Saga, you will check into your lodge. You will be spending a night in Saga.

You will begin your journey early in the morning. Today is an important day of your drive. You will head towards Lake Mansarovar. You will pass through vast Tibetan plains and rocky terrains. You will also get the first glimpse of holy Mount Kailash. On the fifth day of the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra, you will finally reach the holy Lake Mansarovar. You will see the beautiful lake with sparkling waters. The peaceful surroundings of the lake make it the ideal place for meditation and spiritual practice. The lake is also believed to change colors. You can perform rituals and prayers along the lake's edges. Then, you will enjoy a lunch or a simple meal at a spot near the lake. You can visit Lake Mansarovar at night. Its beauty is illuminated by the moon. It’s perfectly safe to go to lake at night. It's still a good idea to travel in a group. If it is possible, we can guide you or you can take Nepalese Sherpa for assistance. It will be cold outside. So make sure you are well covered with warm clothing. Don’t forget to carry a whistle and a torch as well.

You can enjoy the early morning Havan, Puja or any other rituals as your religion on bank of the lake Mansarovar. In the starting month of 2018, Tibetan authorities strictly banned for taking a dip in Mansarovar Lake. It was due litter done by the Kailash Mansarovar pilgrims. If someone was found breaking the guidelines, the Chinese authority would charge a fine of about 5000 Yuan. In September of that year, Dip in Mansarovar lake was allowed with strict warnings of no littering. You can take some time to explore the surroundings and take photographs. After that you will have breakfast. Then you will be driving to Darchen via Lake Rakshastal. As we already know that name literally means “lake of the demon” in Hindu mythology. Darchen is a small town located at the foot of Mount Kailash. After reaching Darchen, you will check in to the hotel. You will be asked to take rest and prepare for the next day. You will have dinner and night stay at the hotel.

You will have an early breakfast in Darchen. Then, you will drive from Darchen to Yama Dwar. It is also known as the gateway of the God of Death. It is said that people who are unable to walk around Kailash can walk around Yama Dwar and will obtain the same blessings from Lord Shiva and Parvati. Then you will climb a little from Yama Dwar to Diraphuk, where you can see the most amazing view of Mount Kailash (6638m). After reaching Dirapuk, the pilgrims will see the Mount Kailash on right side of their trek. Then you will stay at the guesthouse near Dirapuk Monastery. You will have time to explore the Monastery area and take photographs. We'll eat a quick and light dinner and relax in bed because it will be terribly cold that night. It might be below zero degrees.

You will wake up early morning before sunrise to see the first sunlight on Mt. Kailash. It provides an amazing view of the ‘Golden Kailash’. Then you will have a light breakfast. You can take hot water in your flask and carry some snacks. Please make sure that you are well equipped, hydrated and dressed as the weather can change rapidly. You may also feel altitude sickness due to high altitude. Then you will start your trek towards Zuthulphuk. This day is considered as the toughest day of this entire trip. The walk starts with a difficult incline in towards of Dolma La Pas (5630 m). It is the highest point on the Kora. And, it is also considered highly sacred place. The pass is named after Dolma (Tara), the goddess of compassion. You'll see brightly coloured flags flying all around. You will also see people's things or items spreaded around near Dolma La Pass. This location is known as Shiva Tsal (Shiva Sthal). It is believed that those who do parikrama are required to leave something behind. It may include their clothes, an ornament, a drop of blood, or a lock of hair. It symbolizes the act of wishing for the end of a sad life. After that you will climb down to Gauri Kunda. It is also considered as a holy lake. Then you will continue your journey for Zuthulphuk. We shorlty stop at a teashop and then continue your journey until you reach your final destination. Then you are told to take rest and stay at lodge there that night.

Zuthulphuk means "Miracle Cave". It is believed that in this place the Buddhist sage Milarepa meditated and performed miracles. You will spend the morning exploring monastery and the surrounding. The monastery is built around a cave .In Milarepa’s cave, you can find a sacred statue of Milarepa. There you can meditate for some time, if you will. Then, a short and easy trek on a flat trail will bring us to Horchu which is situated on the east shore of Lake Mansarovar. After lunch, you will drive to Dongba. Let’s enjoy the final view of the lake and mountain. You will be staying overnight in a lodge at Dongba.

After having the breakfast, you will be heading towards Kerung from Dongba. You will have the beautiful scenery on the way. You will be stop at a local restaurant or tea house for having lunch. As you already know that Kerung is a small village at the border between Tibet and Nepal. You will be staying overnight at a hotel or guesthouse in the border side. You can share the beautiful memories and experiences during your yatra.

Today is the final day of our Mount Kailash Mansoravar Yatra. In the morning after having a breakfast, you will be driven to the Nepal-Tibet border and cross the Friendship Bridge. Then from Rasuwagadhi you will continue your way to Kathmandu. You will be stop at a local restaurant or tea house for having lunch.

In the Evening, you will reach Kathmandu. You can relax in a hotel or you may go to your own residence as you wish.

The hotel in Kathmandu will also provide you the food and the comfortable room to take rest.

Mount Kailash Mansarovar Yatra by Helicopter starts from Kathmandu. Helicopters fly directly from Kathmandu to Hilsa. Hilsa is a border town on the Nepal-Tibet border. The flight offers amazing views of the Himalayan range. Then the formalities are completed and travelers are transferred to Purang (Taklakot) by road.

  • Mount Kailash Mansarovar Yatra by Nepal Via Rasuwagadhi

Mount Kailash Mansarovar Yatra by Nepal Via Rasuwagadhi route begins from Kathmandu. Travelers will travel by road to the border of Rasuwagadhi. You will cross the border and then your journey will again continue through road to Kerung. The entire journey usually takes 10-12 days from Kathmandu and back. It depends on weather conditions and the pace of the group.

  • Mount Kailash Mansarovar Yatra in Nepal Via Simikot

Mount Kailash Mansarovar Yatra in Nepal Via Simikot route begins from Kathmandu flight to Nepalgunj and then Simikot. You will have to trek through mountainous Humla District. The entire journey usually takes 12-14 days. It also depends on weather conditions and the pace of the group.

Mount Kailash Mansarovar Yatra by Nepal Via Lhasa route begins from Lhasa. It is the capital of Tibet. It involves a longer road journey to reach Lake Mansarovar and Mount Kailash. It’s allows people to explore more of central Tibet’s cultural sites.

Kailash Tour Visa and Permit Update 2024

As we know, obtaining a Tibet Visa is essential for travelers planning to visit the Tibet Autonomous Region (TAR) in China. Mount Kailash is located in far west of Tibet, you will need travel documents for Mount Kailash Mansarovar Yatra. China has tightened its visa requirements for foreign visitors who wish to travel to Tibet through Nepal. Travelers must have valid China Visa (L visa) with Tibet Travel Permit. Not only Tibet Travel Permit, travelers also need to get another three kinds of permits. They are Alien’s travel Permit, Foreign affairs permit, and Military permit. It is issued by different government departments.

Kailash Mansarovar from India

As we know Kailash Mansarovar is a holy place, many Indian pilgrims plan for Kailash Mansarovar Yatra every year. But the application procedure of Tibet Permit for Indian citizens is quite different than other foreignners. According to the update of January 2024, Indian requests for visas to visit Mount Kailash and Lake Mansarovar are not being granted.

After the approval of your Chinese visa, you can apply for a Tibet visa. Basically, there are three types of Tibetan visas for Indians citizens:

  • Tibet Visa except for the Ngari area (Mount Kailash)
  • Pilgrim Visa travelling to Ngari area (Mount Kailas)
  • Indians with US Passport or other passport

Tibet Visa except for the Ngari area (Mount Kailash)

This visa allows you to travel Tibet but not the Ngari Area i.e Mount Kailah or Lake Mansarovar.

Pilgrim Visa travelling to Ngari area (Mount Kailas)

This visa allows you to enter Tibet and visit the Ngari Area. You are considered as a pilgrim if you have this visa even if you are not going to see Mount Kailash or Lake Manasarovar.

Indians with US Passport or other passport

These types of travelers are not considered as a pilgrim even if you are going for Mount Kailash and lake Mansarovar yatra.

Note: For Indians, you can take a direct flight from Delhi to Kathmandu and then a land trip from Kathmandu to Lhasa. It is mostly recommended route. Indian travelers can be arranged to visit the Kailash mountain area by Nepali and Indian travel agencies. Some of the agencies are approved partners of the Pilgrim Centre and the Tibet Autonomous Region Foreign Affairs Office.

Currency Exchange for Mount Kailash Mansarovar Yatra

When planning a Mount Kailash Mansarovar Yatra, it’s important to know about currency exchange for hassle-free journey. You can carry the currencies like Indian Rupee (INR), Nepali Rupees (NPR), Chinese Yuan (CNY) or renminbi (RMB) and United State Dollar (USD) according to your route you choose.

For the Mount Kailash Mansarovar Yatra, it is essential to carry Chinese Yuan (CNY) or renminbi (RMB) as the primary currency. Some teahouses and hotels may not accept the US dollar. Mount Kailash Mansarovar Yatra FAQ's

Anyone from 18 years to 70 years of age who is physically and mentally strong can do the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra.

You will be required to have a valid passport, Upper Humla Permit (if travelling via Nepal), a Chinese visa, and a Tibet Travel Permit to be able to do this Yatra. You need not worry about the permits as we will arrange all the required documents for you.

The best time to go for Kailash Mansarovar Yatra is from mid-May to mid-October.

The temperature varies between -5 degrees (at night) and 25 degrees (at daytime). Also, the place is windy after mid-day. Hence, the nights are colder. Inside the bus, you will be provided with heater, but it is recommended you dress in layers so that it is easier to put the clothes on and off depending on whether you're warm inside the vehicle or outside facing the wind.

In case someone is unable to carry on the Parikrama on foot, you can hire a horse or a yak at your own cost.

No, you cannot use Indian currency in Tibet. The only currency that is accepted is ‘Yuan’ (Chinese currency), but you do not have to worry about the exchange because we will do it for you in either Kathmandu or Nepalgunj, depending on the route.

We take precautions from the start of the trip in order to avoid altitude sickness, but in case of emergencies our team is prepared with emergency medicines to reduce the effects. In case the person is too unwell, s/he would be taken to the hospital and would not continue the Yatra.
