Teahouses and Lodges
Basic Amenities:
Teahouses are small guesthouses run by local families. They offer basic rooms with beds, pillows, and blankets. The accommodations are simple. They are usually shared room rather than private rooms. But if you want private rooms you can inform us during the booking.
As you go to higher altitude, teahouses become less common, and camping becomes necessary. In these higher areas, you’ll stay in tents set up by your trekking crew.
Facilities:
As we know, most teahouses provide twin-sharing and dorm-style accommodations. Common facilities include shared toilets. It is mostly located outside the lodges. Some places offer you hot shower, WIFI and electricity but it can be different according to the location. As you move higher, electricity is not found easily. Then the electricity is usually provided with the help of solar panel or small generators. They might take extra charge for the hot shower, electricity and WIFI. So it is better to bring your own portable power bank for electricity as a backup.
In terms of water, there are plenty of natural water sources along the route, such as rivers and streams. You can get the water from these sources too. But, it is highly recommended to use water using purification tablet or boiling it. You can also find teahouses providing boiled or filtered water for trekkers. They take a small amount of charge.
Food and drink options:
The food served in teahouses is basic but nutritious. It mostly includes traditional Nepali dishes like Daal Bhaat (rice, lentils, and curry), noodles, and various forms of bread. Breakfast may include soup, eggs, and toast. Due to limited resources, the menu is usually repetitive, so trekkers are asked to carry some snacks or instant meals.
For drinks, tea is common and is available throughout the trek. You can find different tea such as ginger tea, herbal tea, black tea and masala tea. Some of the teahouses also provide coffee and soft drinks. Soft drinks are more expensive at the higher region. Alcoholic beverage is also available in some places in lower region. But it is not recommended to have it because it might affect altitude sickness.
Tipping
While tipping is normal in Nepal, it is not mandatory. However, it is a meaningful way to show appreciation for the hard work of your trekking staff. They may be your guide, porter teahouse staff or cook. You can tip them with cash or any other useful gifts according to your wish.

Some of the lodges and the shop in the route may not accept the card. You should have sufficient Nepali Rupees for a successful trek to Makalu Base Camp. NPR is available in various numbers. It includes notes of 1, 2, 5, 10, 20, 50, 100, 500, and 1000. It is recommended to carry cash in NPR for the transaction during the trek. In Kathmandu, there are a lot of money exchange offices with reasonable conversion rates. The rates in Kathmandu are generally more favorable compared to those available in the Everest region or other remote areas.
There are some ATMs in places like Lukla and Namche Bazaar. But, they may not always be in working conditions. As you go higher you may also not find the ATM or banks. So, it is recommended to exchange enough currency in Kathmandu.
