Koshi Tappu Bird Watching Tour Itinerary

On the first day of your bird watching trip to Koshi Tappu Wildlife Reserve, you will fly from Kathmandu to Biratnagar enjoying the spectacular panorama of Everest, Kanchenjunga, Makalu, Gaurishankar, Langtang and Ganesh Himal, you will fly to Biratnagar. Biratnagar is the second-largest city in Nepal and is located in the eastern part of the country, near the border with India. The flight from Kathmandu to Biratnagar typically takes around 45 minutes. Upon landing in Biratnagar, you will take a couple of hour drive to reach the city of Inaruwa. You’ll then drive for another hour to reach a lodge in Koshi Tappu Wildlife Reserve. Overnight at a lodge.

On the second day of your trip, you will be taken to Koshi Tappu Wildlife Reserve for a full day of nature and bird watching activities. Once you arrive at the reserve, you will be taken on a guided nature walk through the different habitats of the reserve. You will take a jeep-drive around Koshi Tappu Wildlife Reserve. We explore the park and may get to see wild water buffalos, Crocodiles, Gaur, blue bull, Asian elephant, and the other animals playing around the dense forests.. Your guide will point out the different bird species and other wildlife that can be found in the area. You will have the opportunity to observe a wide variety of bird species including the endangered swamp francolin and Bengal florican, as well as many other rare and exotic birds. On the third day of your trip, you will continue your bird watching activities at Koshi Tappu Wildlife Reserve and also have the opportunity to experience the culture and way of life of the local communities. Taking a short drive to Chattara, you will head towards a view tower in the park. We will book ourselves an elephant which will take us to the tower. From the tower, you can observe different species of birds such as Black-necked Stork, Imperial Eagle, Comb Duck, Cotton Pigmy Goose, Swamp Francolin, Ruddy Crake, Black-bellied Tern, etc. You can also learn about the Tharu culture and enjoy their cultural show in the evening. After our delightful tour of the wildlife reserve, you will head back to the capital. You can agian relish the scenic view of the Himalayas throughout our flight.

    We, currently, use a four wheel vehicle (average eight passengers) which is suitable even for off-roads. All seats are comfortable for adults as well as the young ones.

    You can choose whether to stay in a hotel, a local home-stay, or a lodge. All kinds of accommodation available provide excellent service and hospitality and are cozy with all the basic facilities required. These accommodations are usually in the Wildlife Reserve vicinity making your access to the reserve easier.

    At a hotel, you can choose to have continental, Chinese, Indian, or Nepali food. However, at a home-stay, you will be given typical Nepali food, and additionally you get to taste the ethnic food of the home owners. We provide you with mineral water, but any special dietary requirement must be brought by self. We, however, do cater for vegetarians. Alcoholic drinks are usually available at dinner, but are at your own expense.

    Our tours are very safe as we keep our vehicle in check and the accommodation is chosen only after a thorough research. Except for the cases of natural calamities, our tours are usually risk free.

    Since the tours mostly feature drives rather than rushed walks, you need to be fit for our tours. While touring on foot, you can use stick for uneven grounds, but you should be okay as Koshi is a plain land and doesn't require physically challenging walks.  

    The tour can be done in any time of the year, but it is preferable to travel during spring (March to May) and autumn (September to mid-December).
