Lower Dolpo Trek, despite of being in one of the remotest areas of Nepal, is one of the least challenging trekking route that has been gaining popularity among trekkers from worldwide. The trek offers an opportunity to experience stunning scenery, rich Tibetan culture, and visit pristine Phoksundo Lake, all at once. Lower Dolpo Trek is situated at the western part of Nepal in Dolpo region. The trekking in this region was opened only in 1982.
The 15-day Lower Dolpo Trek takes through the semi-desert region combined with dense forest filled with pine, rhododendrons and juniper, lush green grasslands, brown landscapes, huge meadows, terraced farm fields, and timber-woods. The people in the region are from Tibetan origin, so the culture and tradition are unique, where Pre-Buddhist Bon Po religion is still practiced. Trekking trail also goes through two high passes- Numa La and Baga La, from where the trekkers get to see the unreal view of Mt. Dhaulagiri (8167m) and its surroundings.
The trekking trail also takes to the mesmerizing Phoksundo Lake. The pristine, turquoise lake is one of the main attractions of lower Dolpo trek, and the trail passes through several monasteries, Chortens, and wonderful villages. Lower Dolpo Trek Itinerary
On Day1st of Lower Dolpo Trek, you will fly from Kathmandu to Nepalgunj. The flight duration is approximately 1 hour. Nepalgunj is a city located in the western Terai region of Nepal, near the border with India. It is an important transport hub and a gateway to several popular destinations in western Nepal, including the Dolpo region. After arriving in Nepalgunj, you can explore the city and its surroundings, visit the local markets, and interact with the local people. You may also want to try some of the local food and beverages. In the evening, you can relax and prepare for the next leg of your journey. You may want to pack and organize your gear for the trek, as you will be heading to the Dolpo region the following day.

The flight takes approximately 45 minutes, with mesmerizing view of Anapurna and Dhaulagiri. After landing at the Juphal airport, you will begin your trek to Dunai, which is a small town located at an altitude of 2,850 meters (9,348 feet). The trek takes approximately 2-3 hours and follows the trail along the Thuli Bheri River. During the trek, you will be surrounded by stunning mountain views and beautiful landscapes. You will also have the opportunity to interact with the local people and learn about their unique culture and traditions. Upon reaching Dunai, you can explore the town and its surroundings. The trail from Dunai to Tarakot is relatively easy, and it follows the trail along the Thuli Bheri River. Along the way, you will pass through several small villages, beautiful forests, and stunning landscapes. Tarakot is a small village located at an altitude of 2,543 meters (8,341 feet) and is situated on the banks of the Tarap Chu River. The village is known for its traditional architecture, and it is home to an ancient fortress known as Tarakot Dzong. Upon reaching Tarakot, you can explore the village and its surroundings. The trek takes approximately 6-7 hours and covers a distance of around 14 kilometers (8.7 miles). The trail from Tarakot to Laini is relatively challenging, as it involves several steep uphill sections. Along the way, you will pass through several small villages, beautiful forests, and stunning landscapes. Laini is a small village located at an altitude of 3,160 meters (10,365 feet), and it offers stunning mountain views and beautiful landscapes. Upon reaching Laini, you can explore the village and its surroundings. You can interact with the local people, enjoy the beautiful scenery, and prepare for the next leg of your journey. The trek takes approximately 5-6 hours and covers a distance of around 12 kilometers (7.5 miles). The trail from Laini to Nawarpani involves a steep uphill climb, as you will be gaining significant elevation. Along the way, you will pass through beautiful landscapes, including lush forests and meadows. Nawarpani is a small village located at an altitude of 3,545 meters (11,627 feet), and it offers stunning views of the surrounding mountains. Upon reaching Nawarpani, you can explore the village and its surroundings. You can interact with the local people, enjoy the beautiful scenery, and prepare for the next leg of your journey. Today you will climb uphill to Kamattarka where the Tarap Khola and Lang Khola confluence.The trail from Nawarpani to Dho Tarap involves a steep uphill climb, as you will be gaining significant elevation. You will also cross the Numa La Pass, which is located at an altitude of 5,190 meters (17,023 feet). Along the way, you will pass through several small villages, including Tokyu and Chharka, and enjoy stunning views of the surrounding mountains and landscapes. Dho Tarap is a beautiful village located at an altitude of 4,090 meters (13,415 feet), and it is one of the most remote villages in the Dolpo region. The village is known for its unique culture and traditions, and it offers stunning views of the surrounding mountains. Upon reaching Dho Tarap, you can explore the village and its surroundings. You can interact with the local people, visit the local monasteries, and enjoy the beautiful scenery. You will also have the opportunity to acclimatize to the altitude and take rest if needed.. Overnight at Do Tarap.
Today you will take a day off to acclimatize. During the rest day, you can explore the village and its surroundings, interact with the local people, and learn about their unique culture and traditions. You can also visit the local monasteries and enjoy the stunning views of the surrounding mountains and landscapes. While exploring the village, we may notice local people wearing homespun Tibetan style clothes. Both Nyigmapa sect and Bon Po sect locals are found in the village. It is recommended that you take the rest day seriously and rest as much as possible. You can also engage in light activities such as short walks or yoga to help your body acclimatize to the altitude. This will prepare you for the next leg of your journey, which involves crossing the high passes and reaching the Upper Dolpo region. Overnight at Dho Tarap.
Relishing the beautiful view of lush green grasslands on both sides of the river, you will trek towards the upper Tarap Valley. Numa La Base Camp is located at an altitude of 4,440 meters (14,563 feet), and it is a popular spot for trekkers to rest and acclimatize before crossing the Numa La Pass. The base camp offers stunning views of the surrounding mountains, and you can spend the evening relaxing and enjoying the beautiful scenery. You will also have the opportunity to acclimatize to the altitude and take rest if needed. Moving alongside the Tarap River, enjoying the wide view of Tarap Valley in the background, you will reach Tokyu village. We continue our trek to Numa La Base Camp walking on a rough trail. Overnight at Numa La Base Camp.
Today is going to be the most challenging and difficult day of the entire trek. The trek takes approximately 6-7 hours and covers a distance of around 8 kilometers (5 miles). You will ascend on a steep trail all the way up to the top ridge of the hill which lies at 5,109m. The Numa La Pass is one of the highest passes in the Dolpo region, and it offers stunning views of the surrounding mountains and landscapes. The trail to the pass involves a steep uphill climb, and you will need to be prepared for the cold weather and strong winds at this altitude. After crossing the pass, you will descend to Pelung Tang, which is located at an altitude of 4,465 meters (14,645 feet). Pelung Tang is a beautiful campsite, surrounded by snow-capped mountains and stunning landscape. You will be rewarded with the most beautiful views of Mount Dhaulagiri (8167m) and brown landscapes Overnight at tented camp.
Today is another challenging day as you climb uphill through steep trail all the way up to the top of Baga La Pass, where you can get an amazing view of Mt. Kanjirowa (6883m) and its picturesque surroundings. The trail from Pelung Tang to Baga La Pass involves a steep uphill climb, and you will need to be prepared for the cold weather and strong winds at this altitude. However, the stunning views of the surrounding mountains and landscapes make the effort worthwhile. After crossing the pass, you will descend to Dajok Tang, which is located at an altitude of 4,080 meters (13,382 feet). Dajok Tang is a beautiful campsite, surrounded by green pastures and stunning landscapes. You can spend the evening relaxing and enjoying the beautiful scenery, and you will also have the opportunity to acclimatize to the altitude and take rest if needed. Overnight at Dajok Tang.
On Day 11 of your itinerary, you will trek from Dajok Tang to Ringmo, which is located at an altitude of 3,600 meters (11,808 feet). The trek takes approximately 3-4 hours and covers a distance of around 8 kilometers (5 miles). The trail from Dajok Tang to Ringmo is relatively easy compared to previous days, as it involves a gradual downhill descent through beautiful forests and pastures. Along the way, you will also pass through several small villages, where you can interact with the local people and learn about their culture and way of life. Ringmo is a beautiful village located near the Phoksundo Lake, which is one of the main highlights of the Lower Dolpo trek. Overnight at Ringmo.
On this day, you will take a short hike to the breathtaking Phoksundo Lake, one of the deepest lakes of Nepal. The turquoise lake, rested in the middle of barren hills, oozes calmness, and has been listed as a wetland area by UNESCO for its rich waterfowl habitat. The lake is surrounded by Tibetan Buddhist settlements. On our way, we can get the sight of yak caravan moving towards their destination carrying the rack sack behind them. We also explore monastery nearby relishing the stunning sceneries. Overnight at tented camp in Phoksundo.
Walking past the village of Chhepka, you will continue your trek through rocky trail and huge overhanging rock. We also come across barren hills and Bon Po settlements on your way to Shyanta. Overnight at tented camp.
For our final day trek, you will walk towards Juphal following the sloppy trail which leads us to Sulighat from where you can see the picturesque town of Juphal. You will continue your trek towards Juphal enjoying the scenery of mountains and villages on our way. You can also spend your afternoon walking around Juphal bazaar. Overnight at Juphal.
You will take an early morning scenic flight to Nepalgunj from Juphal. From Nepalgunj, we catch our next available flight to Kathmandu.

Lower Dolpo Trek FAQ's
If you’re fully fit, you don’t need any specific training. If you are completely deskbound, then some cardiac training is recommended before trekking. You can try stair climbing or hill walking. You'll be trekking uphill and downhill on rough paths for 15-17 days and 5 to 7 hours per day. Altitude may also make things much harder for you. So, you can enjoy your trek if you have a good level of fitness. People with pre-existing medical conditions must seek advice from their doctors before considering the trek. Whilst on the trek, it is common to experience some discomfort, but you will be acclimatized throughout the trek.
For airport pick up and drop off, and Kathmandu visit we use private vehicles of various categories such as cars, vans, micro, bus etc., depending on the size of the group. We take a domestic flight from/to Kathmandu, Nepalgunj and Dolpa.
ATM and credit card facilities can be used in Kathmandu and Nepalgunj. During the Lower Dolpo trek itself, you need to have some cash with you as ATM services are not available in the remote villages, and payment is only acceptable in cash.
Lower Dolpo Trek is a challenging trek that requires a good level of physical fitness and endurance. The duration of the Lower Dolpo Trekking depends on the trekker's pace and itinerary. Generally, the trek takes around 18-20 days to complete, including acclimatization and rest days. However, it can be customized according to your preferences.
You should carry Nepalese Rupees on the trek as teahouses will never accept foreign currencies. You’ll be only spending for hot showers, charging batteries, additional drinks and snacks, and the purchase of curios. Please note that it is illegal to purchase antiques in Nepal.
Sure, You can stay as long as you want. We feel a holiday should not be concluded until you feel content. As per your request, we can add some days to your trip with additional costs to cover guides, hotel, transportation, and other expenses.
Of course, you’ll be given hygienic foods and waters in the trek. We recommend you not to take raw foods and waters without purification and only take boiled water, bottled water or water with iodine or purification treatment. You should follow precautions throughout the trek for the ultimately safe trip.
You’ll be served with varieties of foods in camping, teahouse and lodge. You will have your dinner and breakfast in the same camping, teahouse and lodge you spend the overnight. However, you’ll have your lunch on the way to the destination.
